Hi! 1:10pm: Edmund says, You really are good at the 45 minute conversations, Matt. Nearly half of the students have arrived. I have time for a quick break, then go talk to prospective members of the Classes of 2012 and 2013 (!). 3:31pm: I cant walk more than 10 feet without getting stopped in the halls. The weather hasnt been quite as bad as Id feared, but the rain is starting to pick up a bit now. At least theres no more sleet. 6:05pm: I get a chance to upload some pictures from earlier today. Tim the Beaver made an appearance, welcoming and hugging students: Kevin 11 shows off his nerd-tastic shirt: Ben and Mollie register a student: 8:20pm: Ive been running around getting the Student Welcome and the Festival all set. Now, with the Festival 10 minutes away, Im taking time for a quick breather before things get started. The Welcome and Festival are two of my favorite CPW events, so Im pretty excited. Students are filing into Rockwell Cage the site of the Student Welcome and Im happy to see that most people are traveling in groups, having already made friends on campus. This is going to be a great way to cap off a great day. 12:59am: What a day! I have finally reached my bed. The Festival has ended, and I think people had a good time. The Welcome was awesome, too I wish I could step like the A Phi As, and I wish I could sing like the Logs. My voice is shot now from talking so much, and while Im exhausted, I fear Im still too excited to sleep. Anyway, its time to sign off for the night. Happy CPW Thursday!

How to Use Hyphens in Spanish
Beginning Spanish students, at least those who speak English as a first language, have a tendency to overuse hyphens. Hyphens (known as guiones) are used much less in Spanish than they are in English. They are used infrequently in the written form of everyday speech, finding use most often in journalese and in writing of a less casual nature. The primary time hyphens are used in Spanish is to combine two adjectives or two nouns of equal status to form a compound word. This principle should be made clear by the following examples: Es un curso teà ³rico-prà ¡ctico. (It is a course thats theoretical and practical.)relaciones sino-estadounidenses (Chinese-U.S. relations)el vuelo Madrid-Paris (the Madrid-to-Paris flight)literatura hispano-à ¡rabe (Spanish-Arabic literature)Los pà ©talos son blanco-azules. (The petals are bluish white.) Note, as in some of the above examples, that the second adjective in compound adjectives formed in this way agrees in number and gender with the noun being described, but the first adjective typically remains in the singular masculine form. An exception to the above rule occurs when the first part of the compound form uses a shortened form of a word rather than a word that could stand alone. The shortened form then functions something like a prefix, and no hyphen is used. An example is sociopolà tico (socio-political), where socio is a shortened form of sociolà ³gico. Hyphens can also be used to join two dates, as in English: la guerra de 1808-1814 (the war of 1808-1814). When Hyphens Are Not Used in Spanish Here are some examples of cases where hyphens are not used in Spanish where they are used (or can be, depending on the writer) in English: Numbers: veintiuno (twenty-one), veintiocho (twenty-eight)Words formed with prefixes: antifascista (anti-fascist), antisemitismo (anti-Semitism), precocinar (pre-cook), cuasilegal (quasi-legal)Words or phrases formed by two words that dont have the same status: hispanohablante (Spanish-speaking), bienintencionado (well-meaning), amor propio (self-respect) Finally, it is common in English to combine two words and hyphenate them to form a compound modifier, especially when preceding a noun. Usually, such words are translated as a phrase or single word in Spanish or arent translated word for word. Examples: Well-informed citizenry (ciuidadanà a bien informada)Sub-zero temperatures (temperaturas bajo cero)Good-natured person (persona bondadosa)Man-eating tiger (tigre que come hombres)High-intelligence individuals (individuos de alta inteligencia)

The Return Midnight Chapter 20 Free Essays
Meredith usual y found her parents funny and sil y and dear. They were solemn about al the wrong things like, ââ¬Å"Make sure, honey, that you real y get to know Alaric ââ¬â before ââ¬â before ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Meredith had no doubts about Alaric at al , but he was another of those sil y, dear, gal ant people, who talked al around things without getting to the point. Today, she was surprised to see that there was no cluster of cars around the ancestral home. We will write a custom essay sample on The Return: Midnight Chapter 20 or any similar topic only for you Order Now Maybe people had to stay home to fight it out with their own children. She locked the Acura, conscious of the precious contents given by Isobel, and rang the doorbel . Her parents believed in chain locks. Janet, the housekeeper, looked happy to see her but nervous. Aha, Meredith thought, they have discovered that their dutiful only child has ransacked the attic. Maybe they want the stave back. Maybe I should have left it back at the boardinghouse. But she only realized that things were truly serious when she came into the family room and saw the big La-Z-Boy deluxe lounging chair, her fatherââ¬â¢s throne: empty. Her father was sitting on the couch, holding her mother, who was sobbing. She had brought the stave with her, and when her mother saw it, she broke into a fresh burst of tears. ââ¬Å"Look,â⬠Meredith said, ââ¬Å"this doesnââ¬â¢t have to be so tragic. Iââ¬â¢ve got a pretty good idea of what happened. If you want to tel me about how Grandma and I real y got hurt, thatââ¬â¢s your business. But if I wasâ⬠¦contaminated in some wayâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ She stopped. She could hardly believe it. Her father was holding out an arm to her, as if the somewhat rank condition of her clothes didnââ¬â¢t matter. She went to him slowly, uncomfortably, and let him hug her regardless of his Armani suit. Her mother had a glass with a few sips left of what looked like Coke in front of her, but Meredith would bet it wasnââ¬â¢t al Coke. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢d hoped that this was a place of peace,â⬠her father orated. Every sentence her father spoke was an oration. You got used to it. ââ¬Å"We never dreamedâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ And then he stopped. Meredith was stunned. Her father didnââ¬â¢t stop in the middle of an oration. He didnââ¬â¢t pause. And he certainly didnââ¬â¢t cry. ââ¬Å"Dad! Daddy! What is it? Have kids been around here, crazy kids? Did they hurt somebody?â⬠ââ¬Å"We have to tel you the whole story from that time long ago,â⬠her fatherâ⬠¦said. He spoke with such despair that it wasnââ¬â¢t anything like an oration. ââ¬Å"When you wereâ⬠¦al attacked.â⬠ââ¬Å"By the vampire. Or Grandfather. Or do you know?â⬠Long pause. Then her mother drained the contents of her glass and cal ed, ââ¬Å"Janet, another one, please.â⬠ââ¬Å"Now, Gabriel a ââ¬â ââ¬Å"her father said, chiding. ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËNando ââ¬â I canââ¬â¢t bear this. The thought that mi hija inocenteâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Meredith said, ââ¬Å"Look, I think I can make this easier for you. I already knowâ⬠¦Well, first, that I had a twin brother.â⬠Her parents looked horrified. They clung together, gasping. ââ¬Å"Who told you?â⬠her father demanded. ââ¬Å"At that boardinghouse, who could know ââ¬â ?â⬠Calming down time. ââ¬Å"No, no. Dad, I found out ââ¬â Well, Grandpa talked to me.â⬠That was true enough. He had. Just not about her brother. ââ¬Å"Anyway, that was how I got the stave. But the vampire that hurt us is dead. He was the serial kil er, the one who kil ed Vickie and Sue. His name was Klaus.â⬠ââ¬Å"You thought that there was only one vampire?â⬠her mother got out. She pronounced the word the Hispanic way, which Meredith always found more scary. Vahm-peer. The universe seemed to start moving slowly around Meredith. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s just a guess,â⬠her father said. ââ¬Å"We donââ¬â¢t real y know that there was more than the very strong one.â⬠ââ¬Å"But you know about Klaus ââ¬â how?â⬠ââ¬Å"We saw him. He was the strong one. He kil ed the security guards at the gate with one blow each. We moved to a new town. We hoped you would never have to know you had a brother.â⬠Her father brushed his eyes. ââ¬Å"Your grandfather spoke to us, right after the attack. But the next dayâ⬠¦nothing. He couldnââ¬â¢t talk at al .â⬠Her mother put her face in her hands. She only lifted it to cal , ââ¬Å"Janet! Another, por favor!â⬠ââ¬Å"Right away, maââ¬â¢am.â⬠Meredith looked to the housekeeperââ¬â¢s blue eyes for the solution to this mystery and found nothing ââ¬â sympathy, but no help. Janet walked away with the empty glass, blond French braid receding. Meredith turned back to her parents, so dark of eye and hair, so olive of skin color. They were huddling together again, eyes on her. ââ¬Å"Mom, Dad, I know that this is real y hard. But Iââ¬â¢m going after the kind of people who hurt Grandpa, and Grandma, and my brother. Itââ¬â¢s dangerous, but I have to do it.â⬠She dropped into a Taekwondo stance. ââ¬Å"I mean you did have me trained.â⬠ââ¬Å"But against your own family? You could do that?â⬠her mother cried. Meredith sat down. She had reached the end of the memories that she and Stefan had found. ââ¬Å"So Klaus didnââ¬â¢t kil him like Grandmother. He took my brother with him.â⬠ââ¬Å"Cristian,â⬠wailed her mother. ââ¬Å"He was just un bebe. Three years old! That was when we found the two of youâ⬠¦and the bloodâ⬠¦oh, the bloodâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Her father got up, not to orate, but to put his hand on Meredithââ¬â¢s shoulder. ââ¬Å"We thought it would be easier not to tel you ââ¬â that you wouldnââ¬â¢t have any memories of what was happening when we came in. And you donââ¬â¢t, do you?â⬠Meredithââ¬â¢s eyes were fil ing with tears. She looked to her mother, trying to silently tel her she couldnââ¬â¢t understand this. ââ¬Å"He was drinking my blood?â⬠she guessed. ââ¬Å"Klaus?â⬠ââ¬Å"No!â⬠cried her father as her mother whispered prayers. ââ¬Å"He was drinking Cristianââ¬â¢s, then.â⬠Meredith was kneeling on the floor now, trying to look up into the face of her mother. ââ¬Å"No!â⬠cried her father again. He choked. ââ¬Å"La sangre!â⬠gasped her mother, covering her eyes. ââ¬Å"The blood!â⬠ââ¬Å"Querida ââ¬â â⬠her father sobbed, and went to her. ââ¬Å"Dad!â⬠Meredith went after him and shook his arm. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ve ruled out al the possibilities! I donââ¬â¢t understand! Who was drinking blood?â⬠ââ¬Å"You! You!â⬠her mother almost screamed. ââ¬Å"From your own brother! Oh, el aterrorizar!â⬠ââ¬Å"Gabriel a!â⬠moaned her father. Meredithââ¬â¢s mother subsided into weeping. Meredithââ¬â¢s head was whirling. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not a vampire! I hunt vampires and kil them!â⬠ââ¬Å"He said,â⬠her father whispered hoarsely: ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËJust see she gets a tablespoon a week. If you want her to live, that is. Try a blood pudding.ââ¬â¢He was laughing.â⬠Meredith didnââ¬â¢t need to ask if they had obeyed. At her house, they had blood sausage or pudding at least once a week. She had grown up with it. It was nothing special. ââ¬Å"Why?â⬠she whispered hoarsely now. ââ¬Å"Why didnââ¬â¢t he kil me?â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know! We Stilldonââ¬â¢t know! That man with his front al dripping with blood ââ¬â your blood, your brotherââ¬â¢s blood, we didnââ¬â¢t know! And then at the last minute he grabbed for the two of you but you bit his hand to the bone,â⬠her father said. ââ¬Å"He laughed ââ¬â laughed! ââ¬â with your teeth clamped in him and your little hands pushing him away, and said, ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢l just leave you this one, then, and you can worry about what she wil turn out to be. The boy Iââ¬â¢m taking with me.ââ¬â¢And then suddenly I seemed to come out of a spel , for I was reaching for you again, ready to fight him for both of you. But I couldnââ¬â¢t! Once I had you, I couldnââ¬â¢t move another inch. And he left the house Stilllaughing ââ¬â and took your brother, Cristian, with him.â⬠Meredith thought. No wonder they didnââ¬â¢t want to hold any kind of celebration on the anniversaries of that day. Her grandmother dead, her grandfather going crazy, her brother lost, and herself ââ¬â what? No wonder they celebrated her birthday a week early. Meredith tried to stay calm. The world was fal ing to pieces around her but she had to stay calm. Staying calm had kept her alive al her life. Without even having to count, she was breathing out deep, and in through her nostrils, and out through her mouth. Deep, deep, cleansing breaths. Soothing peace throughout her body. Only part of her was hearing her mother: ââ¬Å"We came home early that night because I had a headache ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Sh, querida ââ¬â ââ¬Å"her father was beginning. ââ¬Å"We got home early,â⬠her mother keened. ââ¬Å"O Virgen Bendecida, what would we have found if we had been late? We would have lost you, too! My baby! My baby with blood on her mouth ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"But we got home early enough to save her,â⬠Meredithââ¬â¢s father said huskily, as if trying to wake her mother from a spel . ââ¬Å"Ah, g racias, Princesa Divina, Vigen pura y impolutoâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Her mother couldnââ¬â¢t seem to stop crying. ââ¬Å"Daddy,â⬠Meredith said urgently, aching for her mother but desperately needing information. ââ¬Å"Have you ever seen him again? Or heard about him? My brother, Cristian?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠her father said. ââ¬Å"Oh, yes, we have seen something.â⬠Her mother gasped. ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËNando, no!â⬠ââ¬Å"She has to learn the truth sometime,â⬠her father said. He rummaged among some cardboard file folders on the desk. ââ¬Å"Look!â⬠he said to Meredith. ââ¬Å"Look at this.â⬠Meredith stared in utter disbelief. In the Dark Dimension Bonnie shut her eyes. There was a lot of wind at the top of a tal buildingââ¬â¢s window. That was al her mind had a thought for when she was out of the window and then back into it and the ogre was laughing and Shinichiââ¬â¢s terrible voice saying, ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t real y think weââ¬â¢d let you go without questioning you thoroughly?â⬠Bonnie heard the words without them making sense, and then suddenly they did. Her captors were going to hurt her. They were going to torture her. They were going to take her bravery away. She thought she screamed something at him. Al she knew, though, was that there was a soft explosion of heat behind her, and then ââ¬â unbelievably ââ¬â al dressed up in a cloak with badges that made him look like some kind of military prince, there was Damon. Damon. He was so late sheââ¬â¢d long ago given up on him. But now he was flashing a there-and-gone bril iant smile at Shinichi, who was staring as if heââ¬â¢d been stricken dumb. And now Damon was saying, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m afraid Ms. McCul ough has another engagement at that moment. But I wil be back to kick your ass ââ¬â immediately. Move from this room and Iââ¬â¢l kil you al , slowly. Thank you for your time and consideration.â⬠And before anyone could even recover from their first shock at his arrival, he and Bonnie were blasting off through the windows. He went, not out of the building backward as if retreating, but straight ahead forward, one hand in front of him, wrapping them both in a black but ethereal bundle of Power. They shattered the two-way mirror in Bonnieââ¬â¢s room and were almost al the way through to the next room before Bonnieââ¬â¢s mind tagged the first ââ¬Å"empty.â⬠Then they were crashing through an elaborate videoset-window ââ¬â made to let people think they had a view of the outdoors, and flying over someone lying on a bed. Thenâ⬠¦it was just a series of crashes, as far as Bonnie was concerned. She barely got a glimpse of what was going on in each room. Final yâ⬠¦ The crashing stopped. This left Bonnie holding on to Damon koala-style ââ¬â she wasnââ¬â¢t stupid ââ¬â and they were very, very high in the air. And mobilizing in front of them, and off to the sides, and as far as Bonnie could see, were women who were also flying, but in little machines that looked like a combination of a motorcycle and a Jet Ski. No wheels, of course. The machines were al gold, which was also the color of each driverââ¬â¢s hair. So the first word Bonnie gasped to her rescuer, after he had blasted a tunnel through the large slave-ownerââ¬â¢s building to save her, was, ââ¬Å"Guardians?â⬠ââ¬Å"Indispensable, considering the fact that I didnââ¬â¢t have the first idea where the bad guys might have taken you and I suspected that there might be a time limit. This was actual y the very last of the slave-sel ers we were due to check. We final yâ⬠¦lucked out.â⬠For someone who had lucked out, he sounded a little strange. Almostâ⬠¦choked up. Water was on Bonnieââ¬â¢s cheeks but it was being flicked away too fast for her to wipe it. Damon was holding her so that she couldnââ¬â¢t see his face, and he was holding her very, very tightly. It real y was Damon. He had cal ed out the cavalry and, despite the city-wide mind-gridlock, he had found her. ââ¬Å"They hurt you, didnââ¬â¢t they, little redbird? I sawâ⬠¦I saw your face,â⬠Damon said in his new choked-up voice. Bonnie didnââ¬â¢t know what to say. But suddenly she didnââ¬â¢t mind how hard he squeezed her. She even found herself squeezing back. Suddenly, to her shock, Damon broke her koala-grip and pul ed her up and kissed her on the lips very gently. ââ¬Å"Little redbird! Iââ¬â¢m going to go now, and make them pay for what they did to you.â⬠Bonnie heard herself say, ââ¬Å"No, donââ¬â¢t.â⬠ââ¬Å"No?â⬠Damon repeated, bewildered. ââ¬Å"No,â⬠Bonnie said. She needed Damon with her. She didnââ¬â¢t care what happened to Shinichi. There was a sweetness unfolding inside her, but there was also a rushing in her head. It real y was a pity, but in a few moments she would be unconscious. Meanwhile, she had three thoughts in mind and al of them were clear. What she was afraid of was that they would be less clear later, after she had fainted. ââ¬Å"Do you have a star bal ?â⬠ââ¬Å"I have twenty-eight star bal s,â⬠Damon said, and looked at her quizzical y. That wasnââ¬â¢t what Bonnie meant at al ; she meant one to record onto. ââ¬Å"Can you remember three things?â⬠she said to Damon. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d gamble on it.â⬠This time Damon kissed her softly on the forehead. ââ¬Å"First, you ruined my very brave death.â⬠ââ¬Å"We can always go back and you can have another try.â⬠Damonââ¬â¢s voice was less choked now; more his own. ââ¬Å"Second, you left me at that horrible inn for a week ââ¬â ââ¬Å" As if she could see inside his mind, she saw this slice into him like some kind of wooden sword. Pointillism free essay sample
Has everyone heard of Van Gogh? He is one of the most popular artists of the western cultural tradition. His paintings are some of the most treasured pieces of art and have sold for hundreds of millions, but during his lifetime he was shunned and his works were ignored. He was a shy and introverted, he spoke 4 languages and was well read but he lived and worked as a peasant. He was born march 30, 1853 in Groot-Zunbert which is a small Dutch village. His full birth name was Vincent Willem van Gogh He was the oldest child of 6. Little is known about his early education At the age of 15 with his family facing financial hardship, The museum thing did not work out, as I found out most of his jobs Van Goghââ¬â¢s father was a pastor so leaning on his religious upbringing he decided He failed at romance, failed at finances and finally committed suicide. We will write a custom essay sample on Pointillism or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page So why is he so important? Vincent was a self taught artist that used the early inspirations from the museum and the surrounds of his life. Putting aside his mental state Van Gogh saw and felt passion in his art. He created images of desire and inhumane experiences. Images of the evil that men succumb to and when viewing these images you really canââ¬â¢t help having a compassionate response to them. Van Gogh also lived out the stereotype of the crazy artist. So I think he satisfies some stereotypical expectations that our culture has imposed on artist. * Pointillism is a technique of applying paint in a pattern of different colored dots. From a distance the eye does not see the dots individually and the colors blend together to form an image. Van Gogh painted a Self Portrait in 1887 using this method. The lively effect of the dots and color in this image contrast sharply with his dour expression. * Impasto The word impasto' is Italian dough or mixtureis a technique of spreading paint thickly onto the canvas with a palette knife or brush so that the strokes are visible. Van Gogh used this technique often, but it is notably effective in his painting Starry Starry Night where the swirling brushstrokes of the stars and clouds in the sky create a sense of rapid movement. Van Gogh worked instinctively and quickly and this distinctive brushwork is a recurring theme in his paintings. First, it makes the light reflect in a particular way, giving the artist additional control over the play of light on the painting. Second, it can add expressiveness to the painting, the viewer being able to notice the strength and speed applied by the artist. Third, impasto can push a painting into a three dimensional sculptural rendering

Small Boat Cooling System Operation and Maintenance
Small Boat Cooling System Operation and Maintenance There are two common engine cooling schemes in small vessels. Raw water cooling circulates seawater through the engine block directly, while closed loop cooling utilizes a heat exchanger to isolate the engine coolant from seawater which carries the excess heat out of a vessel. Both systems have similar components and operation. The more complex of the two systems is actually two simple cooling loops in series. The concepts are easy to understand and so are the fixes to common problems. Raw Water or Open Cooling We will follow the path of the water from the sea into the intake which is fitted with a valve called a seacock to close the opening if a coolant line fails. These connections are large and will put several hundred gallons per minute into your hull if they fail. The cooling water passes through a strainer which should be checked each day. Emptying this little basket of garbage is very important since it will impede the flow to the engine which could cause damage. Expensive damage. Next the seawater travels through a hard piped line or sometimes flexible hose to the cold side of the engine cooling system. Any soft lines should be secured with double band clamps on each connection, they should be checked very often for failure or wear. On its journey through the engine the cool sea water absorbs heat by passing through small channels cast into the engine components. These channels give plenty of surface area where heat can be absorbed but they do have drawbacks like clogging and freezing in cold weather. As the seawater exits it passes though a thermostat which can be a automotive spring type device or a sensor connected to a automatic gate valve. If the water is below the ideal temperature threshold for the engine cooling water by passes the engine until heat removal is required. A cold running engine is bad for the machinery and the efficiency of an engine. The cooling water and exhaust gasses are combined in a wet exhaust system where they exit the vessel. If exhaust is aerial then cooling water passes through another seacock to exit the hull. Closed Loop Cooling This type of cooling is very similar to raw water cooling except in place of an engine theres a heat exchanger. Basically a tube within a tube that transfers heat without allowing liquids to mix. The coolant circulates on the engine side while raw seawater circulates on the heat exchanger side. Other than this important point all operations are similar. Pros and Cons of Open and Closed Systems Open Pros: simple and well known, no chemicals, if hard piped the only maintenance is cleaning the strainer. Cons: Prone to clogging with debris, pure water allowed to freeze in engine passages will crack the engine block, in some environments the inside of the system can become home to mussels and barnacles. Closed Pros: Much less time to bring a engine to a stable operating temperature, less temperature fluctuation increases fuel and power efficiency, winterizing tasks and cold damage are minimized, if a clog appears it will be in the heat exchanger side which can be easily serviced; a clog in an engine passage requires disassembly excess heat can be used for space heating. Cons: Marine coolant is expensive and many systems have a high capacity, potential to leak coolant into the surrounding water, additional anodes must be placed and monitored for signs of corrosion. Whats the Best Marine Cooling System? The answer depends on you location and operations. Fouling and clogs are the biggest issue for most operators and local knowledge works best for these situations. If you must choose one type of system over another and everything else seems equal, then take a look at the anti-fouling paint used in your area. If it is meant to aggressively prohibit growth of marine life, then you should consider a closed system to reduce the risk of damage. How to Flush Your Work Boat Cooling System While there are a couple thousand large ships in the global merchant fleet, there are perhaps a couple hundred thousand smaller work boats. Operators of these boats are often also owners and to keep costs down some go without professional maintenance services. If you choose this approach it will save money, although it does increase the risk of damage due to human error. Working carefully and understanding some of the underlying concepts of you equipment will assure the job is done correctly while still saving money. Many of us have entered this profession through the world of small boats. Those long days spent at the marina washing recreational boats for extra spending money turned into more complex jobs. Soon, those little electrical and plumbing jobs earned a few dollars, and hopefully a good reputation. Then one day, while crammed under the helm station of a ship, the thought crosses your mind; how did I get here? Formal educationà is available for these jobs and many excellent schools will give you a comprehensive understanding of the systems of any size vessel.

Theà Florida-class retained the fully-enclosed conning towers employed on theà Delawares as their effectiveness had been demonstrated at engagements such as theà Battle of Tsushima.à Other aspects of the superstructure, such as the funnels and lattice masts, were altered to some degreeà relative to theà earlier design.à Though designers initially desiredà to armà the ships with eight 14 guns, these weapons were notà sufficiently developed andà naval architectsà instead decided toà mount ten 12 guns in five twin turrets.à Placement of the turrets followed that of theà Delaware-class and sawà two situated forward in a superfiring arrangement (one firing over the other) and three aft.à The after turrets were arranged with one in a superfiring position over the other two which were located back-to-back onà the deck.à As with the precedingà ships, this layout proved problematic in that turretà Number 3à could not fire astern if Number 4 was trained forward.à Sixteen 5 guns were arranged in individual casemates as a secondary armament. Approvedà by Congress, theà Florida-class consisted ofà two battleships: USSà à (BB-30) and USSà Utahà (BB-31).à Though mostlyà identical,à Floridas design called for the constructionà of a large, armored bridge which contained space for both directing the ship and fire control.à This proved successful and was utilized on later classes. à Conversely,à Utahs superstructure employed a traditional arrangement for these spaces.à The contract for buildingà Utahà went to New York Shipbuilding in Camden, NJà and work commenced on March 9, 1909.à Buildingà continued over the next nine months andà the new dreadnoughtà slid down the ways on December 23, 1909, with Mary A. Spry, daughter of Utahà Governor William Spry, serving as sponsor.à Construction progressed over the next twoà years and on August 31, 1911, Utahà enter commissioned with Captain William S. Benson in command. USS Utah (BB-31) - Early Career: Departing Philadelphia,à Utahà spent the fall conducting a shakedown cruise which included calls at Hampton Roads, Florida, Texas, Jamaica, and Cuba. à In March 1912, the battleship joined the Atlantic Fleet and commenced routine maneuvers and drills. à That summer,à Utahà embarked midshipmen from the US Naval Academy for a summer training cruise. à Operating off the New England coast, the battleship returned to Annapolis in late August. à Having completed this duty,à Utahà resumed peacetime training operations with the fleet. à These continued until late 1913 when it crossed the Atlantic and embarked on a goodwill tour of Europe and the Mediterranean. In early 1914, with tensions rising with Mexico, Utahà moved to the Gulf of Mexico. à On April 16, the battleship received orders to intercept the German steamer SSà Ypirangaà which contained an arms shipment for Mexican dictator Victoriano Huerta. à Eluding American warships, the steamer reached Veracruz. à Arriving atà the port,à Utah,à Florida, and additional warshipsà landed seamen and Marines on April 21 and, after a sharp battle, began the US occupation of Veracruz. à After remaining in Mexican waters for the next two months,à Utahà departed for New York where it entered the yard for an overhaul. à This complete, it rejoined the Atlantic Fleet and spent the next two years in its normal training cycle. USS Utah (BB-31) - World War I: With the US entry into World War I in April 1917, Utahà moved to the Chesapeake Bay where it spent the next sixteen months training engineers and gunners for the fleet. à In August 1918, the battleship received orders for Ireland and departed for Bantry Bay with Vice Admiral Henry T. Mayo, Commander-in-Chief of the Atlantic Fleet,à aboard. à Arriving,à Utahà became flagshipà of Rear Admiral Thomas S. Rodgers Battleship Division 6. à For the final two months of the war, the battleship protected convoys in the Western Approaches with USS Nevadaà (BB-36) and USS Oklahomaà (BB-37). In December,à Utah helped escort President Woodrow Wilson, aboard the liner SSà George Washington, to Brest, France as he traveled to the peace negotiations at Versailles. Returning to New York on Christmas Day,à Utahà remained there through January 1919 before resuming peacetime training with the Atlantic Fleet. à In July 1921, the battleship crossed the Atlantic and made port calls in Portugal and France. à Remaining abroad, it served as flagship of US Navys presence in Europe until October 1922. à Rejoining Battleship Division 6,à Utah took part in Fleet Problem III in early 1924 before embarking General John J. Pershing for a diplomatic tour of South America. à With the conclusion of this mission in March 1925, the battleship conducted a midshipman training cruise that summer before entering Boston Navy Yard for a significant modernization. à This saw its coal-fired boilers replaced with oil-fired ones, the trunking of its two funnels into one, and the removal of the aft cage mast. à USS Utah (BB-31) - Later Career: With the completion of the modernization in December 1925,à Utahà served with the Scouting Fleet. à On November 21, 1928, it again sailed forà sailing South America. à Reaching Montevideo, Uruguay,à Utahà brought on board President-elect Herbert Hoover. à After a brief call at Rio de Janeiro, the battleship returned Hoover home in early 1929. à The following year, the United States signed the London Naval Treaty. à A follow-on to the earlier Washington Naval Treaty, the agreement placed limits on the size of the signatories fleets. à Under the terms of the treaty,à Utahà underwent a conversion into an unarmed, radio-controlled target ship. à Replacing USSà à (BB-29) in this role, it was re-designated AG-16. à Recommissionedà in April 1932,à Utahà shifted to San Pedro, CA in June. à Part of Training Force 1, the ship fulfilled its new role for the majority of the 1930s. à During this time, it also took part in Fleet Problem XVI as well as served as a training platform for anti-aircraft gunners. à Returning to the Atlantic in 1939,à Utahà participated in Fleet Problem XX in January and training with Submarine Squadron 6 later that fall. à Moving back to the Pacific the following year, it arrived at Pearl Harbor on August 1, 1940. à Over the next year it operated between Hawaii and the West Coast as well as served as a bombing target for aircraft from the carriers USSà Lexingtonà (CV-2), USSà Saratogaà (CV-3), and USSà Enterpriseà (CV-6). à USS Utah (BB-31) - Loss at Pearl Harbor: Returning to Pearl Harbor in the fall of 1941, it was berthed off Ford Island on December 7 when the Japanese attacked. à Though the enemy focused their efforts on the ships moored along Battleship Row,à Utahà took a torpedo hit at 8:01 AM. à This was followed by a second which caused the ship to list to port. à During this time, Chief Watertender Peter Tomich remained below decks to ensure that key machinery continued to operate which allowedà the majority of the crew to evacuate. à For his actions, he posthumously received the Medal of Honor. à At 8:12 AM, Utahà rolled to port and capsized. à Immediately thereafter, its commander, Commander Solomon Isquith, could hear trapped crewmen banging on the hull. Securing torches, he attempted to cut as many men free as possible. In the attack,à Utahà suffered 64 killed. à Following the successful righting ofà Oklahoma, attemptsà were made to salvage the old ship. à These proved unsuccessful and efforts were abandoned as Utahà had no military value. à Formally decommissioned on September 5, 1944, the battleship was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register two months later. à The wreck remains in place at Pearl Harbor and is considered a war grave. à In 1972, a memorial was constructed to recognizeà the sacrifice ofà Utahs crew.
